In life, there are many different combinations of factors that give rise to happiness. What makes up the sum total of your happiness?

Pre and post cancer, it did not seem as if there was any difference in the combination of factors that made up Xie Li Ping’s happiness in life, yet the resulting outcome of the sum total was markedly different. Looking back, she is grateful that her illness not only helped to put an end to her tendency of worrying over little things, it was also the catalyst that enabled her to receive the Buddhist teachings and experience the joy of Dharma through participating in Tzu Chi activities.

Abandoning Narcissism so that Wisdom can Flower

Shen Shui Xian’s busy life used to revolve around a small food stall. With little education, Shui Xian had a ready tongue and a fierce manner picked up from spending her early years at the markets with her mother. More than half a century later, from the “Dharma as Water” study sessions, she learnt that “being clever does not indicate one has wisdom,” and that “not doing evil does not make one a good person.”

Replacing Overtime with Volunteer Work

Whenever she heard Master Cheng Yan say that “time is running out”, Zhuang Mei Hui would hang her head feeling ashamed, because she had put off what was important for too long. Having known of Tzu Chi for 12 years, Zhuang had always believed that Tzu Chi’s mission in helping others is the answer to life. As such, she started to reflect upon herself, “If I don’t grasp the opportunity to help others now, then when will I ever start?” And so, amidst her busy schedule between work and home, Zhuang learnt to focus on the present. Through increasing her work efficiency, she freed herself from overtime work to engage in volunteering.

Surviving a Close Call to Fulfil a Dream

She has to rely on the music to cue her in on the sign language and her hearing is not fully dependable, yet Li Chun Yu, who had a close brush with Death recently, has resolved to persevere on in anticipation of 14 December 2013, when the stage will be brightly lit up for the“Dharma as Water” stage adaptation.
