The Singapore Indoor Stadium can seat 8,000 people and is Singapore’s largest performance venue. Over the last two years, as the Tzu Chi Foundation (Singapore) embarked on public presentations of segments of the “Dharma as Water” stage adaptation (a.k.a. sutra adaptation of the Water Repentance Text), they had to overcome multiple challenges such as securing an appropriate venue, gathering and training the teams of participants and recruiting members of the public to participate in the Dharma assembly.
Wu Hui Li may be a vegetarian herself, but in the past, as a chef, her hands had not only instructed countless numbers of her students, they had also prepared countless varieties of animal flesh and sea creatures for human consumption. The karma of killing that she had accumulated over her entire life, coupled with that of her students, was immense. Moved by the message that we must respect all life, as advocated by Master Cheng Yen, Wu resolutely turned her back on her old profession, deciding that henceforth, she would respect the right to live for all creatures of creation.
Wei Ci Xian may be just a little girl of ten, but she is very passionate about the “Dharma as Water”stage adaptation. Not only did she undertake the role of a sign language facilitator, helping to perfect the movement and gestures of the senior volunteers, she also managed to influence both parents to become sign language facilitators as well. The whole family, including her elder brother, have signed up as participants in the stage adaptation, and today, their home is often filled with the sounds of laughter, while incidences of bickering among them have become rare.
After understanding the law of cause and effect, Lin Hua Zhen decided to face up to her karma with an attitude of calmness and acceptance as challenges unfolded in her life. A language barrier too, was no obstacle in the face of her determination to understand the teachings contained within the “Water Repentance” text. She depended on the English explanations to understand the teachings, and used hanyu pinyin to learn the Chinese pronunciations of the words. With her determination lending itself to the task of inviting friends to participate in the “Dharma as Water” stage adaptation, Lin picked up her phonebook and began inviting others to experience the joy of Dharma with her.
